SMA Inverters Take Top Honors at Solar Decathlon Four of Overall Top Five Teams Utilized SMA Technology ROCKLIN, Calif., December 1, 2009—The future of solar technology was on display at the U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon, held in Washington D.C., where teams utilizing SMA inverter technology took four of the top five spots, including two-time overall winner Team Germany. The defending champions, comprised of students from the Technische Universitaet Darmstadt, also took first place in the Net Metering Contest, which measured the competing houses’ Energy Balance and Energy Surplus. Team Germany used SMA Sunny Boy and Sunny Mini Central solar inverters in their design and was the only team to receive all 150 possible points in the Net Metering Contest. Demonstrating its industry leading capabilities, SMA inverter technology was also used by seven of the top 12 finishers in the Net Metering Contest and seven of the top 15 overall. “SMA is incredibly proud of all the teams competing in the Solar Decathlon and we are pleased our technology assisted so many of the top finishers,” said Jeffrey Philpott, director of marketing for SMA America. The 2009 Solar Decathlon consisted of 20 college and university teams who competed to design, build, and operate the most attractive, effective, and energy-efficient solar powered house. Scores were aggregated through a total of ten contests. The overall winner was the team with the highest total score at the end of the competition. The Solar Decathlon also provided the public with an opportunity to see solar power up close and witness how it could work in concert with energy efficiency and premium home design. “SMA considers education, and events like the Solar Decathlon which elevate the public’s awareness of solar power as critical components of a future that will be powered by clean, renewable energy,” added Philpott. The Solar Decathlon competition was launched in 2002 and is now held every two years during the fall in Washington D.C.
